Germans rarely compliment strangers. Moreover, in Germany, it is not customary to start flirting in German with someone on the street, in the bus, on the subway, in the train. After such an upsetting introduction, this article may seem meaningless… But it’s too early to put your hands down! Let’s see how you can flirt in German!

Firstly, there are exceptions among the Germans, and secondly, a large number of Italians, Spaniards, Brazilians and other foreigners who are capable of compliments live in Germany. In Germany, on-work compliments are rarely made, so it’s quite pleasant to receive them, let’s see them:

  • Sie sehen gut aus – You look good
  • Sie sind bezaubernd – You are charming

More informal compliments:

  • Du gefällst mir – I like you
  • Deine Frisur steht dir fantastisch! – Your hair is fantastic!
  • Du hast ein tolles Gespür für Farben und Stil! – You have an amazing sense of color and style!

From this point on, we can already talk about serious feelings:

  • Du bedeutest mir viel – You mean a lot to me
  • Du bist mir wichtig – You are important to me / important
  • Ich kann ohne dich nicht – I can’t live without you
  • Für mich bist du alles – You are everything to me
  • Alle meine Gedanken drehen sich um dich – All my thoughts are only about you
  • Ich habe mich in dich verliebt – I fell in love with you
  • Ich bin verrückt nach dir – I’m crazy about you

The most classic declaration of love is:

  •  Ich liebe dich – I love you

Remember that German adjectives are used as adverbs. With their help, you can evaluate skills:

  • Du sprichst sehr gut Deutsch – You speak German very well
  • Du tanzst ausgezeichnet – You dance great
  • Du spielst hervorragend Gitarre – You play excellent guitar

The Germans appreciate the compliments associated with their professional activities:

  • Sie sind ein hervorragender Musiker – You are an outstanding musician

You can make a compliment referring to the family and friends of the person you’re talking to:

  • Sie haben ein süßes Kind – You have a lovely child
  • Ihre Frau ist bezaubernd – Your wife is charming

It will be very effective if you can adequately respond to the compliment:

  • Das hört man gern! – Nice to hear this!

It’s easy to compliment in return. Memorize what the the other party says and repeat his words by adding the word auch (also):

  • Sie sehen auch gut aus – You look good too
  • Sie haben auch ein süßes Kind  – You have a lovely child too

Or say it this way:

  • Das Gleiche kann man von Ihnen sagen – The same can be said about you
  • Das trifft auf Sie genauso zu – You can give the same compliment

Inviting someone is usually preceded by a recon of the situation:

  • Hast du heute Abend Zeit? – Do you have time tonight?
  • Hast du heute Abend schon etwas vor? – Do you already have plans for tonight?
  • Hast du einen festen Freund? – Do you have a permanent friend?

Compliments are often followed by sentences:

  • Sehen wir uns morgen Abend? – See you tomorrow evening?
  • Gehen wir tanzen! – Let’s Dance!
  • Ich schlage vor, wir gehen ins Kino – I suggest going to the cinema
  • Darf ich Sie / dich heute Abend zum Essen einladen? – Can I invite you / you to dinner tonight?
  • Willst du mit mir ausgehen? – Do you want to go somewhere with me?

How to accept an invitation:

  • Vielen Dank, ich komme gerne – Thank you very much. I will gladly come
  • Sehr gern – Very willing
  • Mit Vergnügen! – With pleasure!

How to refuse an invitation:

  • Ich kann leider nicht – Sorry, I can’t
  • Vielleicht das nächste Mal – Maybe another time
  •  Ich habe keine Zeit – I have no time
  • Dazu habe ich keine Lust – I have no desire
  • Ich habe viel zu tun – I have a lot to do
  • Ich habe schon einen Termin – I already have an appointment
  • Ich bin beschäftigt – I am busy
